What Is Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF)?

What does The Ordinary natural moisturizing factors do?

This is best explained by The Ordinary’s Chief Scientific Officer Prudvi mohan Kaka:

“Our skin has its own ways to try to maintain hydration.”

“When we drink water, our skin maintains some of that water. But our day-to-day activities will make them deplete in such a way that the hydration is lost from the skin or the barrier is compromised.

So the natural moisturising factors are like tiny molecules (like sugar), that tightly bind to water and they prevent water escaping.”

Prudvi explains that because these three products offer different textures, they all prevent water escaping in a different way.

I’ve never personally tried this OG moisturiser (I’m more of a combo gal and only get dry skin in winter so it’s not really for me) but everyone I know with dry skin raves about it.

Here’s just a couple of those glowing five-star reviews:

“Great moisturiser, with a combination of a few The Ordinary products my sister says I look like a glazed doughnut, my face is clear, shiny and hydrated. I find the moisturiser really seals in all my serums, provides fantastic hydration to areas around my nostrils and helps with soothing my skin after shaving...” - Hanky.

“Love this product. I have more of a Combination- oily skin. But It works great for those winter days! Very light on the skin and leaves it very soft and bouncy. A little goes a long way! Is not very greasy and doesn't get oily after long hours of wear. Easy to build up on. Purchased quite a few of these as gifts too! It's THAT good...” - Nitty.

Want a mini The Ordinary natural moisturising factors review?

The results of this hotly-anticipated moisturiser did not disappoint.

Both Senior Content Manager Joanna Fleming and I instantly fell in love with NMF + PhytoCeramides when we were one of the first very lucky ones to try it in Canada (before its official release).

I actually WhatsApp’d her from my hotel room gushing over how lush, rich (but not heavy) it is and how GOOD it looks under makeup (as you can see in the picture above).

Here’s a video of how hydrating it is on the skin layered over The Ordinary hyaluronic acid and The Ordinary niacinamide serums.

Together, the bouncy, dewy skin of my dreams:

When we asked one of the formulators at Deciem headquarters how she likes to use The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + PhytoCeramides in her routine, this is what she told us:

“I really like to use it at night, so I’ll do my cleanser, then all my treatments, then because of the high emolliency load and just how rich and luxurious this product is, I like to kind of seal everything in as my last step and I seal it all in with my NMF + PhytoCeramides.”

See what Joanna and I got up to in when we visited The Ordinary headquarters in Canada in the YouTube video below:

Controversial opinion though, even though I get a really oily t-zone - I’m a bigger fan of the The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + PhytoCeramides (if you couldn't already tell).

But if you have oily skin and hate the feel (or thought) of a heavier cream and want the best gel moisturiser for oily skin under $25 - stock up on this.
