My Honest Thoughts on 7 Skincare Products Celebrities (Allegedly) Swear By

When it comes to researching celebrity skincare products, I go so deep, it’s pretty much a full time job.

Extensively investigating and researching the recommendations of the rich and famous brings me so much joy.

Like, honestly, do they really, REALLY use the products they say they do?

What are other people saying about their product recommendations? And do these celebrities mention the same products multiple times?

There are a couple of things to consider before buying into a celeb-endorsed product recommendation. Firstly, ask yourself: Do they have my skin type? And are my skin concerns the same as theirs?

Plus, we all know celebrities have THE best access to the world’s most renowned facialists and dermatologists.

So, if they are opting for a $30 face cream when they could literally buy whatever they want, whenever they want, then maybe it’s actually... good?

On the flipside, celebs have a lot of selling power, which is why many make the big bucks as global brand ambassadors.

There are also dangers in following celebrity skincare advice... remember when a particularly high-profile actress turned wellness entrepreneur told everyone to apply sunscreen like a highlighter?!

All of these factors make it hard to know whether the products celebs say they love are going to be right for you.

So, I've been road-testing seven celeb-approved skincare recommendations to bring you my honest thoughts. Read on for my verdicts...

1. Cosmedix Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser.

Cosmedix Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser Cosmedix Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser

What: Cosmedix Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser

Celebrity endorsement: Victoria Beckham says, “[Aussie facialist to the stars] Melanie Grant suggests I use Cosmedix [to cleanse with] every morning and night and I am loving it.”

My honest thoughts:

Soooo I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this, but this is one of my all-time favourite cleansers. Coincidentally, Queen V. Beckham aka Posh Spice is one of my favourite celebrities of all time, so this combo on my face just works.

Cosmedix Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser is a gel-based, lightly-exfoliating lactic acid cleanser that leaves your skin feeling fresh. More importantly, it thoroughly cleanses the skin and removes makeup.

Caveat: Because it contains an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), I’d only use this cleanser once a day rather than twice. But otherwise, I'll forever be repurchasing this product.

2. Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel.

What: SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel - 30ml

Celebrity endorsement: Sam Smith says, “This is my favourite thing of all time... it’s amazing and you can just feel your skin drinking it.”

My honest thoughts:

Enriched with vitamin B5 (panthenol) and hyaluronic acid, every skin type could benefit from using this serum.

It's soothing, and not sticky like some other hydrating serums. It's no wonder celebrities love it.

It's worth noting this product is a bit pricey for the average person, but if you want to up the ante on your hydration, then yes, it's worth adding to cart.

3. The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid Emulsion 2%.

What: The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid Emulsion 2%

Celebrity endorsement: Kim Kardashian posted about this product on her app* back in 2018.

My honest thoughts:

This is a nice, gentle, introductory vitamin A product. The milky, liquid formula sinks straight into the skin, and contains two non-irritating retinoids (forms of vitamin A).

Honestly, this serum wouldn’t be my first choice. Plus, I'm doubtful it's really in Kim K's presumably bougie AF skincare routine. But it's a great product for anyone who has budget concerns.

4. Estee Lauder ANR Serum.

What: Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex

Celebrity endorsement: Liz Hurley says, “I’ve used Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair – an excellent serum – since the 1990s. It really is a beauty and I have used it twice a day for 20 years.”

My honest thoughts:

People are obsessed with this luxe ANR serum! It’s one of the brand’s best-selling products and universally beloved for how it instantly rejuvenates the appearance of weary skin.

Perhaps it's because I work with cosmeceutical brands as a dermal therapist, but I'm not sure I get the hype. This hydrating serum could work for you if you want an all-in-one product you don't have to think too much about. However, if signs of ageing are a concern, I'd recommend using in conjunction with a vitamin A product.

That said, if this product works for you, don't stop on my behalf! Plus, the brown and gold bottle looks super chic in the bathroom.

5. COSRX Snail Mucin Power Essence.

What: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence 100ml

Celebrity endorsement: Emily Ratajkowski shared with her followers that she was using the snail mucin found in this product to relieve her stressed out complexion.

My honest thoughts:

I AM INTO THIS. In all seriousness, I love a hydrating essence moment and this one contains snail secretion aka mucin (which seems a bit odd, but weirdly, it works really well layered under serums).

This product is silky, nourishing and extremely gentle, and would be perfect for anyone who needs hydration. It made my skin so soft and plump!

6. Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre Moisturiser.

What: Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré Moisturiser

Celebrity endorsement: Elle McPherson says, “It's a no-nonsense, good quality cream."

My honest thoughts:

This French moisturiser has been a makeup artist favourite for years, and I have probably used it for just as long.

It’s rich in fatty acids and vitamins, making it a super nourishing cream that acts as an excellent primer under makeup. It does have a strong floral scent, so if fragrance is an issue for you, then I would avoid.

7. Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado.

What: Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment

Celebrity endorsement: Shay Mitchell told Shape Magazine she’d take this eye cream to a deserted island if she had to choose!

My honest thoughts:

Straight up, this product isn't for you if you're prone to milia (the hard, white bumps of keratin that can form under the eyes and should be extracted by a skin professional).

Everyone else, this lush eye cream is very underrated in my opinion. It's very thick and incredibly hydrating, so dry skin types, wait are you waiting for?

I actually prefer it under makeup - if your concealer creases, you need to give this a try. It's also a great budget-friendly option as far as eye creams are concerned.
