The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion, previously known as Advanced Retinoid 2%, is one the most-popular Retinoid-based products from the skincare experts at The Ordinary. Known for being one of the most effective ingredients for anti-ageing, Retinoids come in different potencies and varying formulations to reduce sensitivity.

The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion is a lightweight, moderate-strength emulsion with low irritation levels. The product’s active ingredient, Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR), a less abrasive alternative to retinoic acid, or prescription retinol medication, to accelerate skin cell turnover and reverse the signs of ageing and acne.

Key benefits of The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion:

  • Moderate-strength Retinoid
  • Low risk of irritation for Retinol skincare
  • Lightweight, creamy emulsion
  • Can treat a variety of skin conditions, including pigmentation, ageing, and acne
  • Helps prevent the formation of wrinkles
  • 30ml

What is Retinoid?

‘Retinoid’ is a broad name for any product that contains a derivative of Vitamin A. The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% contains two different forms of Retinoids that are easily absorbed by the skin. This product causes less irritation than traditional forms of Retinoid.

The main active Retinoid is Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR), a specific and advanced form of Retinoid that works harder to diminish signs of ageing whilst being more gentle on skin. This is blended with a form of pure Retinol in a protective capsule system, which aids the delivery of the HPR.

How does The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion work?

This anti-ageing serum from The Ordinary works by accelerating the rate of skin cell turnover, making way for newer, fresher, and healthier cell growth underneath. It also helps to slow down the degeneration of collagen in the skin, the main protein for youthful-looking skin, and helps to prevent the formation of dynamic facial folds and wrinkles. The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion can help with pigmentation, dark spots, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, and active breakouts.

How to use The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion

Introducing Retinoids into your skincare routine slowly is important to prevent irritation and sensitivity. Start with just once a week, and then slowly increase usage up to a maximum of four times a week. The emulsion should only be applied at night, because Retinol can heighten skin sensitivity to UVA and UVB rays. A daytime sunscreen is always recommended when using this product.

Apply the emulsion after water-based serums and before oils and heavier creams. Do not use this product along with other Retinoid treatments.

Who should use The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion?

The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion is suitable for anyone who is concerned about skin texture, acne breakouts, ageing skin, or pigmentation. Retinoids should be avoided when pregnant or breastfeeding and should not be used on very sensitive, damaged, or compromised skin.

How does Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion compare to other The Ordinary skincare products?

In 2017, The Ordinary expanded its collection of Retinoid products to introduce new formulations and strengths. Advanced Retinoid 2% was renamed to Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion to fit in with the new naming conventions of the extended range.

Here is a breakdown of the different Retinoid formulas The Ordinary currently makes:

Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane (Moderate Strength, No Irritation)

Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane (High Strength, No to Low Irritation)

Retinol 0.2% in Squalane (Low Strength, Moderate Irritation)

Retinol 0.5% in Squalane (Moderate Strength, High Irritation)

Retinol 1% in Squalane (High Strength, Very High Irritation)

The Granactive Retinoid collection uses the same delivery system for the same active ingredient, Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR), a less harsh alternative to retinoic acid but a relatively new creation in the skincare world. The remaining three products use pure Retinol, a tried and tested ingredient, which, once applied, needs to be converted by the body in order to deliver benefits. Retinol can cause irritation, so it is important to introduce it slowly into your skincare routine.

Does The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion help with acne?

Retinol for acne is a great way to both minimise active breakouts and prevent future breakouts from occurring. The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion helps to accelerate skin cell turnover to minimise the longevity of acne whilst promoting healthier skin cell growth for a clearer complexion.

Is The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion good for scars and pigmentation?

The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion is a great product to include in a routine for treating scarring and pigmentation, as it helps to speed up skin cell turnover for newer and fresher skin. When looking for new methods and products to minimise and treat rosacea, it is always recommended that you consult a doctor first. Whilst the emulsion can help with the symptoms and appearance of rosacea, it may further irritation, particularly on those who have extremely dry, dehydrated, or compromised skin.

Is The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion comedogenic?

The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion contains acne-reducing ingredients, so despite its light oil base, it is non-comedogenic and suitable for those with congested skin.

Most Helpful Criticism

Not for me
I've tried about 3 different retinol products from different companies but this is my least favourite of the three however it is great for the price and doesn't...
  1. Non irritating and effective

I have only been using this for a week as my nightly serum. I was too scared to use retinol for its irritating and peeling factor but this one is so gentle and great to use every night. I’d rather use something that works slowly, gently than something that’s too harsh like other retinol products. I thought my skin was already good but adding this to my routine was the best thing I ever did! Only a week and made my skin texture even better. I had so many compliments at work how smooth my skin is! It’s the only product that eliminates the stubborn little whiteheads and bumps around my mouth and chin, my under eye is so smooth, fine lines gone. And I couldn’t believe how fast this works! It’s my first TO product and will venture more on this brand. The price is unreal too!
  2. Not harsh like some retinoids

This is a pretty good retinoid serum - I like that it isn't as harsh as many on the market so you can use it a bit more without worrying about what it will do to your skin (assuming you've got a tolerance already). I use it twice a week and it gives my skin subtle but definitely good results - the next morning my skin looks smoother and brighter but without any red or dry patches. Would recommend.
  3. Great intro retinol

I tried this and the Retinol 0.5% in Squalene and loved both. Great intro retinol products which didn't irritate my normal/dry skin.
  4. Wonderful product!

I tried this emulsion after seeing some Facebook adverts- I had bought The Ordinary's Buffet and was already hooked on the brand. This goes on smooth and I have definitely noticed a reduction in fine lines and congestion. I use it at night as it can make your skin more susceptible to the sun- I find it a great PM treatment. The liquid goes on smooth and sinks in fast, leaving only slight 'residue' but skin feels hydrated. A little goes a long way! I will definitely re-stock!
  5. Best introductory retinoid

I purchased this because I read that it was a good, gentle introductory retinoid for new users. I do not have overly sensitive skin but this has not caused me any irritation at all. I have not experienced any issues with the sun either but I have been applying sunscreen religiously every day to my face which is a must with retinols (and, let's be honest, probably the most important skincare product for anyone regardless). The formula doesn't look or smell like anything special but that's not what The Ordinary is about anyways. It glides on nicely and sinks in quickly.

Retinols are supposed to take several months for full effects to show so I'm not expecting too much difference right away, but my skin has been lovely and smooth since I started. After a month or two I plan to step up to a slightly stronger retinol and i'm not sure how I'll go with the squalane in place of this lovely emulsion.
  6. Great Product

I have only been using this product for a week and can already see results. This is my first time using a retinol product and have had no skin sensitivity.
  7. Amazing results

I'm in my 40's and I'm already noticing improvements in my skin after a week of using this cream. I just hope it keeps going! Very happy so far.
  8. Gentle and effective

This is such a good retinol product. Really gentle, but over time it does seem to make a difference to my overall complexion. I found it to help with breakouts and evenness of my skintone.
  9. Smooth and Soft

A great product and solution for those who are a bit intimidated by the harsher retinoids out there.
I have combination skin prone to dermatitis from allergies and this is an effective and gentle product. Feels so nice and is not at all ‘oily’ feeling - it absorbs really well. Love it!
  10. A M A Z I N G

I love, love, love this product. I had made the change from The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane to this and have not looked back. I'm 3 days in with no breakouts (usually this happens the same day if something does not agree with skin) and no dry cheeks. I apply after my cleanser and use from my forehead down to my décolletage. I wake up in the morning and my skin feels great. I highly recommend this if you have combo, easily irritated skin. It's a no fuss no frills product and I love it.
  11. Affordable cream

I've only started to use this product so I haven't seen amazing results as yet, but I have noticed some smoothness in my aging skin and it's definitely helped with my rosacea. Hopefully these improvements will continue as I continue to use the cream. Affordable cream, which is awesome.
  12. Great for a start on Vit A for dry skin

Loved this products as it was a first time using vitamin A for me. I have very dry, sun damaged skin. I use this every second night (low level Lactic acid every other night) and a Vit C in the mornings. Please be diligent in using a high SPF with these products! I also have to make sure I moisturise very very well both under this with water serums and on top with oil serums. But a great start and no reactions from me. I will move from here onto a slightly stronger Vit A. Really helping with my skin (I think smaller lines are much less, specifically from this product). Im noticing a huge improvement from using the whole range, including this product.
  13. Excellent value for money

I love this product so much! I use it 3 nights a week and whenever I have breakouts it really calms my skin down. My face always feels amazing in the morning and I have quite sensitive skin!
  14. Absolutely amazing!

Its just been a week since i used this product and i can already see the results coming! i wake up with the softest skin in the morning and my makeup literally glides on! I have sensitive skin and it did not irritate my skin at all! highly recommended guys!
  15. No more Scrubs

I love the ordinary products and this one really replaces my scrub. I find that congestion on my chin is gone after using the product and also my complexion just glows. You really have to use strong SPF protection after using this product though as your skin becomes sensitive to the sun afterwards.
  16. My favourite of The Ordinary products

I begun using this after a friend suggested I switch from Vitamin C serums to Vitamin A, and not wanting to spend a lot while my skin adjusted, gave this product a shot. The results have been overwhelming. My skin now glows and my pores have minimised drastically. I have already repurchased this serum and have raved about it to anybody who will listen. Loved it.
  17. Makes my skin happy

This product is a fundamental part of my skincare regime and I cannot believe the difference it has made to the health of my skin! When I combine it overnight with the vitamin c 23% from the Ordinary I wake up with plumped, glowy skin!
  18. Good quality ingredients, and it's working!

I’m 53 and started using this as part of my daily regimen. I am so mpressed with The Ordinary range. I’m enjoying using this serum nightly before using moisturizer. It spreads very easily and I’m noticing a definite reduction in fine lines so I’m pretty happy about that!
  19. So glad I seem to have got this in time

My skin is starting to age and this is my first introduction to a retinoid and it seems to have kept my slowly growing forehead wrinkles at bay. Will definitely buy again when it runs out
  20. Such a great affordable retinol product

I'm using this every second night and my forehead lines are reducing noticeably. I was a nightly retinol user up until about a year ago when I pulled back after my dermatologist upped the % and my skin just couldn't adjust comfortably. Trying to go a lower dose and introduce other anti-ageing actives that are not as aggressive. In saying that, retinol is still essential for me and this product is perfect, I actually really like the texture and it doesn't feel drying, to the point where when it sinks in I don't feel like I need to follow with moisturiser (or I forget), and the next day everything is nice, glowy, and less fine lines.
