Skincare trends tend to come and go and let’s be honest, not all of them are worth giving a try.

However, skin flooding is one that as a Dermal Therapist I can get around (especially if you have dry skin), although technically it’s not really that new.

You see, while the term 'skin flooding' may sound particularly daunting it’s more about hydration, rather than technically ‘flooding’ your skin, and fun fact: your skin loves to be hydrated. I bang on about it all the time.

Plus, almost any skin type can try skin flooding, and so many of us are probably already doing it - it’s just been given a trend-based name, but the thing with trend-based names is that while trendy they can often make skincare terms much easier for people to understand.

Remember 'Skin Cycling'?

Anyway, whether you’ve heard of it before, or are feeling the effects of winter and are after ways to pump hydration back into the skin, let’s break down the concept of skin flooding below.

What Is Skin Flooding and How Do We Do It?

Skin flooding (or #skinflooding) isn’t really an exciting new concept.

In fact, it’s just the method of layering skincare products to boost hydration in the skin.

You know how we’re all told that applying skincare to damp skin can be beneficial? (i.e. it has the potential to help your products absorb better).

Well, it’s essentially just that.

Skin Flooding Benefits.

Hydrated skin is the main benefit to skin flooding.

Plus, it’s a method that helps the skin hold onto water, while also locking moisture in.

Which realistically is beneficial for a bright, hydrated and glowy complexion no matter the skin type.

Dehydrated skin is such a common skin concern that pops up in clinic, especially at this time of year and while I do love my actives they need to be balanced in our skincare routines to ensure our barrier is protected and we avoid skin issues such as irritation, flaking, and even inflammation - all of which have the potential to get worse when our skin is dehydrated and not looked after.

Best Products for Skin Flooding.

1. A Gentle Cleanser.

To try skin flooding you will need to start by cleansing your skin with a gentle cleanser like the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser 236ml. This is a cream based formula. Although any gentle cleanser would work.

2. A Humectant-Based Toner.

Then while your skin is still damp, follow your cleanse with a humectant based toner or mist.

I personally can’t live without the Cosmedix Mystic Hydrating Treatment. It’s jam packed with hydrating ingredients and a great option for all skins.

3. Layer on an Essence.

Next, if you have an essence, layer that on top. I’d suggest something like Sulwhasoo Essential Comfort Balancing Water 150mlwhich is designed to strengthen the skin’s barrier while soothing at the same time.

4. Add Your Favourite Hydrating Serum.

Then pop on your favourite hydrating serum, to further deliver hydration (and technically ‘flood’ your skin).

Avene Hydrance Boost Concentrated Hydrating Serum 30ml - Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a great one to try.

This is Avene’s latest release and so great for all skins - including sensitive. It’s mid-weight, non sticky and works well under makeup too!

5. Seal Everything in With an Emollient Moisturiser.

Then you just lock it all in with an emollient moisturiser to help prevent dry/dehydrated skin further.

Viviology Ceramide Moisturiser 50mL would be a great option here as it isn’t too heavy and suits a variety of skins.

However, if your skin is super dry and/or dehydrated and you’re doing this at night you could also opt to lock it in with the Aspect Probiotic Maskfor an extra punch.

See, easy.

Also, while I have seen people on TikTok take this trend to the next level and layer up to eight layers of hydration at once - there really is no need.

Especially if you are more of an oily/acne-prone skin type. Simple is still effective.

What Skin Types Should Avoid the Skin Flooding Trend?

What skin types should be skin flooding?

Skin flooding would be most beneficial to dry/dehydrated skins although technically it would be fine for everyone.

The thing with skincare trends, is that while they are popular it’s still important to ensure they are compatible with your skin type and concerns.

However, skin flooding is one that is generally quite safe to follow.

Dry/dehydrated skin could do this every day but I'd just be mindful with overdoing the hydration or layering too many products onto an oilier or acne-prone skin in case you risk clogging pores -  attempt less frequently.

Plus, when you layer too many steps you’re probably more likely to risk your products pilling so I’d suggest you avoid trying to play cosmetic chemist with too many skincare ingredients.

Keep the skin flooding process simple. Hydrated skin = healthy skin and this is a very simple and beneficial trend to try - especially through winter.
