I’m a Makeup Artist & Here’s the Best Dewy Makeup for Mature Skin I’ve Found

So much has changed since I first started doing makeup, and although some products and techniques will always outlast trends, change can be a good thing.

No mater your budget, age or life stage, you can find numerous products that'll work for your skin, and make you look and feel confident.

Take 'mature skin foundation'; ever wondered, is matte or dewy foundation better for mature skin?

Often, society tells us we should be covering up or hiding ourselves as we age, hence we reach for increasingly fuller-coverage foundations.

Personally, I'm a big fan of dewy makeup for most people, including those with mature skin.

Generally speaking, mature skin can be drier and may lack that natural radiance.

Therefore, I find a fresh, dewy finish provides my skin with more hydration.

And hydration is mature skin's best friend, believe me!

Now, I know many of you out there might be hesitant about the whole 'dewy makeup look', especially my oily or fellow mature-age friends.

Will a dewy finish foundation for mature skin make me look too shiny? What about makeup settling into fine lines?

Think of the term 'dewy' as meaning hydration, radiance and glow.

Step 1: Skin Prep Moisturiser for Mature Skin.

The best dewy makeup for mature skin starts with skin prep.

Weleda Skin Food is one of my favourite skin prep creams for mature skin because it provides intense moisturisation and hydration.

Pro tip: The best way to apply this cream is by warming it up in your palms first before pressing it onto your skin.

M.A.C Cosmetics Strobe Cream is maybe the best glow primer for mature skin, and has been a fave of mine for years.

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré Moisturiser is also up there with the best glow products for mature skin, especially if your skin is super dry.

Step 2: The Best Dewy Foundation for Mature Skin.

I have a few dewy finish foundation picks to share, but IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Illumination SPF 50 is my favourite.

The illuminating IT Cosmetics CC cream combines a buildable medium-coverage foundation with the hydrating and anti-aging ingredients of a skincare serum.

I'm wearing the shade 'Tan' in this selfie here. Plus, the SPF 50+ is an added bonus when applied on top of my usual sunscreen.

Pro tip: I love using a damp makeup sponge to apply this product for a seamless, skin-like finish.

Ultra Violette Dream Screen SPF50 Tinted Veil is another great glow foundation for mature skin.

The tinted sunscreen serum provides a light amount of coverage with a dewy finish for a gorgeous glow. 

Looking for a mature skin foundation with slightly more coverage? Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is a cult classic you can't go past.

The light-to-medium buildable coverage dewy foundation gives skin a flawless finish and a lit-from-within glow.

Step 3: Concealer for Mature Skin.

Creamy concealers will always get my vote.

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eye Eraser is a full-coverage cream concealer with a wind-up sponge tip applicator.

It instantly brightens the under-eye area for a radiant and fresh finish, but can also be used anywhere on the face.

Bobbi Brown Skin Concealer Stick is another creamy favourite of mine on the bougier side.

The concealer stick offers 12 hours of wear, and a natural skin-like finish that won’t cake or crease.

Step 4: A Dewy Cream Blush.

Cream blush works on most skin types, but it's especially perfect for dry or mature skin.

They add a radiant, hydrated sheen to the skin, whereas some powders can appear matte or flat, and settle into fine lines.

M.A.C COSMETICS Glow Play Blush is my top pick on myself and my clients.

I’m wearing the shade 'Grand' in this selfie above, which is best described as a warm petal pink.

The key to applying a cream blush so it looks like the colour is naturally coming through your skin is to blend, blend and blend.

Pro tip: I find pressing the cream blush onto the apples of the cheeks with my fingertips works well, and gives a seamless application.

Step 5: Eyeshadow & Mascara.

You can't go past the Napoleon Perdis Luxe Lids Eye Stix for something quick, easy, radiant and fresh on the eyes.

These easy-to-use cream eyeshadow sticks are water-resistant, smudge-proof and super easy to blend.

I’m wearing 'Taupe It Up', but there are heaps of colours to choose from.

Looking for a great mascara?

Designer Brands Centre Stage Curl & Volume Mascara Blackest Black is a volumising tubing mascara that won't break the bank.

The tubing formula coats each lash in a jet black water-resistant tube that comes off easily at the end of the day with warm water.

A unique hourglass brush shape also lifts and curls the lashes from root to tip.

Pro tip: I love curling my lashes with a lash curler prior to applying my mascara, just to add some extra lift to the eyes.

Step 6: Lips.

Tinted lip balms and moisturising lipsticks are great if you're worried about product settling in fine lines.

Ultra Violette Sheen Screen SPF50 Lip Balm is one of my new favourites.

The tinted lip balm with added sunscreen soothes and hydrates lips, and protects them from the sun with SPF 50.

Even better, it gives a beautiful sheen to the lips, without being sticky or greasy.

Mature Skin Makeup Tips.

Finally, there’s no right or wrong way to wear a dewy makeup look. Do what makes YOU feel good.

Here are a few extra makeup artist tips I've learnt over the years:

• Your foundation will only look as good as the skin under it, so don't skip the first skincare step. 

• Apply your skincare serums, a hydrating moisturiser and sunscreen first, and let it all absorb into your skin before applying your foundation to avoid pilling.

• There is a difference between dewy and shimmer.

• Dewy makeup for mature skin = hydration and radiance. Chunky shimmer particles can accentuate our skin's texture.  

• Not sure if a product is great for mature skin? The texture is key. Think creams and liquids, over powders.
