Enzymes.

Beauty Glossary Image Beauty Glossary Image

Enzymes in beauty products are proteins that work to digest proteins and other particles, allowing skin cells to rebuild and regenerate.

Common enzymes found in beauty products include papain (a proteolytic enzyme extracted from the papaya fruit), bromelain (a proteolytic enzyme extracted from pineapple), and alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, and citric acid (AHAs).

Proteases are used in cleansers to break down proteins for a deep clean; lipases help moisturizers to better penetrate the skin; and phosphatases are used to reduce inflammation and help with the skin’s renewal process.

Amylases help skin exfoliate, while collagen helps firm skin.

Lipases act as a natural emollient to help to break down fats and oils, allowing them to be absorbed into the skin more easily.

These enzymes help to exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells, and unclog pores.

They can also help reduce inflammation and irritation caused by acne.

Enzymes can be found in exfoliants, serums, moisturisers, cleansers and more.
