How Should I Apply Facial Oil to Increase Absorption?

Don't pass up on the benefits of facial oils just because you worry that they won't absorb quickly. Use these tips and tricks to make sure your product sinks in fast for a smooth, not shiny, finish.

The No. 1 concern we hear regarding facial oils is whether they feel sticky. It's true that most facial oils take a little longer than moisturisers do to sink in. But if you're using the right oil, it definitely shouldn't look or feel as though it's coating your face.

How Should I Apply Facial Oil to Increase Absorption?

The first step to ensuring your facial oil absorbs quickly is proper application.

Facial oils are concentrated products, so you need to use only a tiny amount to reap benefits. While moisturisers contain similar precious oils, their formulas are diluted with over 70% water.

Water content in a product, of course, hydrates skin. But you have to use more of a water-based product to get the conditioning and antioxidant properties of the natural oils therein.

While moisturisers should be applied generously, facial oils should be applied cautiously. Just 2 to 3 drops of facial oil is more than enough for a full facial application.

The trick to proper facial oil application is to distribute the oil among your fingertips and then gently pat them over your skin. Many people start at the cheeks and rub outwards from there. This is less effective, because the oil will collect more heavily where you begin and appear that it hasn't properly absorbed.

The final trick to helping a facial oil absorb quickly is to apply a little moisturiser afterwards. Don't let this confuse you. If you follow the skincare layering rule, then facial oil should always be applied after moisturiser.

However, reapplying a bit MORE moisturiser after using a facial oil helps the oil absorb much more quickly. That's because face creams and lotions contain ingredients that help oils dissolve into your skin.

If you're following the proper application and you still feel that your facial oil isn't absorbing, you may be using the wrong oil for your skin type.

Using the right facial oil for your skin type is essential for complete absorption.

In the same way that moisturisers are formulated specifically for dry, normal, or oily/combination skin types, facial oils are too—although this isn't as obvious from the labels of the latter.

Some natural oils, such as rosehip oil, are composed of ingredients that are thinner in consistency and faster to absorb. Other natural oils, such as jojoba oil, are very similar to the composition of your own sebum. Then there are the extremely rich and nourishing oils, such as coconut oil.

In general, oils that are high in a fatty acid called 'linoleic acid' are best for combination-to-oily skin types. On the other hand, facial oils high in oleic acid are best for dry complexions.

Oils high in linoleic acids (omega-3 and omega-6) include:

  • Rosehip
  • Borage
  • Linseed/flaxseed
  • Hemp
  • Safflower
  • Grapeseed

Which are found in copious quantities in the following facial oils:

Oils high in oleic acid include:

  • Macadamia
  • Olive
  • Avocado
  • Apricot
  • Hazelnut
  • Almond

If you're using an appropriately balanced oil for your skin type and following the proper application method, you should be good to go. If you still feel that your facial oil isn't absorbing the way you'd like it to, you should try a dry oil.

Dry facial oils are formulated to absorb quickly into your skin.

Some facial oils are made with additional ingredients that increase their 'dryness', or absorbability. These products often combine natural oils with the benefits of additional nutrients. A good example of a nutritive dry oil that absorbs quickly is Medik8 Glow Oil, which is high in vitamin C, omega-3, and omega-6.
